It's a lovely piece and the drama between the couple is absolutely interesting and amusing especially when he expected the usual argyle experience after he had cold shouldered her for so long. Adults, no matter how much they have grown or how refined they have become never really change viscerally : they still act the same way in similar situation. The couple's behavior was typical of how teenagers would behave. I am sure Vanessa will get the gate put in eventually, but hey who am I to get involved in a happy marriage. It took a couple of reads before I adopted the mood of its dry sense of humor, and how Vanessa is on the way to the man's heart, through - brisket and apple strudel, poached eggs and a hint of what he is missing on those Argyle nights. to me this story illustrates through a snapshot the tensions of married life. I enjoyed its subtle references.
