FAQ

When is it?

29 March 2008, from 10:30am until late. Email me if you need accommodation.

Back to top of FAQs.

Where is it?

The King of Games will be held at First Floor Flat, 206 Stockwell Road, Brixton, London SW9 9TB - and one or more nearby pubs.

Back to top of FAQs.

Which games are going to be played?

Entrants vote for up to five games they would prefer to play in each category. The five games with the most votes in each category become part of this year’s competition (drawn votes are decided by picking lots). The final list of games will appear above when it is decided.

On the day, the games that get played in each individual Round 1 play-off are randomly selected from the final list of games in each category. If you get to the next round, you will play a different randomly selected game, and so on. Therefore you will have to be good at a range of games in order to win the category (or you'll have to hope that the ones you're weak at don't get selected!).

What variation of the rules will be played?

When the final list of games has been confirmed, there will be a link to the official King of Games rules here.

What will happen on the day?

It depends on what games are chosen and how many entrants there are, but you can expect the timetable to look something like this:

10:30 - Round 1: Two-Player Board Games
11:30 - Round 1: Multiplayer Board Games
12:30 - Round 1: Card Games
13:00 - Round 2: Two-Player Board Games
13:30 - Lunch (provided)
14:30 - Round 1: Pub Games
15:30 - Round 1: Parlour Games
16:30 - Finals: Multiplayer Board Games
17:30 - Supper (probably a take-away)
18:30 - Round 2: Pub Games
19:30 - Round 2: Parlour Games
20:30 - Finals: Pub Games
21:00 - Round 2: Card Games
21:30 - Finals: Two-Player Games
21:50 - Finals: Card Games
22:20 - Finals: Parlour Games
22:40 - Award Ceremony

23:00 - END

Told you it was gruelling!

How are the winners decided?

Again, it depends on what games are chosen and how many entrants there are, but it is likely that each category will be a sudden death knockout-style tournament.

The King (or Queen) of Games title goes to the entrant with the best average performance across all categories.

Back to top of FAQs.

What happens if someone wins multiple categories?

The King (or Queen) of Games cannot have any other titles, so if he or she won a category, that category's title would go to second place.

However, if someone wins multiple categories without qualifying as the King (or Queen) of Games, he or she is entitled to multiple titles.

What does my £5 entry fee get me?

It gets you a chance to become the King of Games, it gets you lunch, and it covers some of the organiser's expenses.

Back to top of FAQs.

Which games can I vote for?

Any games you want that fit into the definitions of each category, but keep in mind that other people will have to have voted for the game as well for it to be chosen as part of the tournament.

The flyer for this event contains some suggestions.

Back to top of FAQs.

Which category does this game I want to vote for fit into?

Some games could fit into more than one category - for example Halma is usually a two-player game, but it can be a four-player game. And some games, like Rummikub, seem not to fit into any category.

If you want to vote for one of these kind of difficult-to-categorise games, just take a guess at the appropriate category. If your game has received more votes in a different category, the organiser will (at his discretion) change the category of your vote so your game is fairly represented.

Back to top of FAQs.

What happens after I enter?

You will be contacted by the organiser to confirm your place, and you will receive an information pack in March 2008 confirming details of the games, the venue and the schedule.
