Imagination in Children's Art

The project 'Imagination in Children's Art' focuses on the artwork created by children independently, outside the frameworks given by parents, teachers and other adults. I believe that children's artwork provides a strong insight into the gift of imagination that many children have before the desire to conform with common thinking has taken hold.

By Merad of Ben Jonson Primary School

This project invited teachers from schools across London to give their classes an opportunity to create an art masterpiece of 'whatever they like'. Teachers then made their own initial selection to send 20 pieces of work from across the primary age range, which represented this mysterious 'gift of imagination'.

By Deborah of Chesterton Primary School

Here you will find all the contributions to the project, including a shortlist which represent 'classics' of children's imagination.

This project represents the first step in an exploration of imagination in children's artwork. I believe that imagination is a talent under-celebrated by our education system and difficult to recognise using any assessment criteria. At the same time, children who struggle in other areas of academia receive an enormous boost of confidence by being recognised as 'talented' among all children of their age group.

Enormous thanks are due to Jim Segers and Charlie Fish for the time, wisdom and support they contributed to the project.
