Her loneliness was palatable without making her pathetic. I also liked the descriptive detail that matched the narrator’s voice. I look forward to read more of C. I'm put in mind of another of her stories in which two walkers meet by chance, explore - and gain mutual insight into - the uncertainties of their family relationships. Worcester Weekends isolates the exquisite misery of loneliness. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation define loneliness as 'the disparity between ones social expectation and its reality.' Good old JRF! But Ceinwen really hits the nail on the head with the tedious minutiae in the toss up between Puffed Wheat and a toastie, the unfailing availability to help out others, and that unexplained fear of accepting help oneself. Why are we like we are? Why is Brian Moore's Judith Hearne like she is? 'Ambivalence, ambiguity, and boredom' don't just sound well, or look well on the page, they mean well, I'm just so glad that things work out for Jo. Thanks for another good read and good think Ceinwen!
B r o o k eAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17142492723192523556noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-155197540326010032.post-38034554576421316502015-10-23T15:56:37.714+01:002015-10-23T15:56:37.714+01:00Hi Ceinwen, I found this an excellent story about ...Hi Ceinwen, I found this an excellent story about the truth of loneliness. Particularly when the 'gang' have flown the home nest. The contradictions of wanting to share time with someone else, but still maintaining an independence persisted throughout. The ending was just right as both George and Jo have found a new way forward -almost as a new beginning. Therefore, in my opinion this ended with a tinge of inspiration. At first I thought it was rather long, however, this only added to the tone and melancholy mood of the character.
Regards,
James.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-155197540326010032.post-27753409594115820322015-10-23T15:54:57.003+01:002015-10-23T15:54:57.003+01:00Good, believable characters and a true portrayal o...Good, believable characters and a true portrayal of loneliness and the instinct to hide it. I was also struck by your description of Jo's fall and how we all become embarrassed in such a situation, and even if hurt, pretend otherwise so that we can scuttle away. Reading your story brought home how complex human emotions are, and how weird it is of us to try to hide them. Well done, Ceinwen.
