I think that my idea was for the geography to overwhelm and dwarf the human characters, in the way that their lives and love affair have been swept away by greater forces. They are almost speechless against it, and it makes their relationship so much more fragile, and moving. A masterclass in depicting detail and setting as if it were a character in the story. The emotion is also very palpable, felt a bit voyeuristic as reader.
